About the café

A small kitchen, a short menu, and coffee we would be happy to be judged on.

The café's main room, with wooden tables and a long window.

The room

Somewhere to sit for a while

The room is the point as much as the coffee is. Big windows, comfortable chairs, and tables at a height that works for a laptop, a newspaper or a plate of eggs — whichever one you brought.

We keep the music low enough to talk over, and we do not hurry anyone along. If you want to stay for two hours with one cup, that is a perfectly good way to use the place.

The kitchen

Made in the morning, served the same day

Pastries are baked before opening, and what is on the counter is what was made that morning. When something runs out we take it off the board rather than stretch it further.

The menu is deliberately short. It is easier to make a few things well every day than to make a long list adequately.

The coffee

Beans chosen for the cup, not the bag

Coffee is bought for how it tastes as espresso and with milk, which is how almost everyone drinks it. That is a different bean from the one that wins a tasting on its own, and it is the one worth having.

The grinder is adjusted through the day as the weather changes. It is a small thing that makes a noticeable difference to the drink in front of you.

Still to come

Opening hours and locations

Set per location, in that location’s own timezone. A single organization can span timezones, so hours are never resolved from a global default.

Ordering online

Pickup, dine-in and table ordering are built but not switched on for this site yet. The menu itself is live — everything on it comes from the kitchen’s own catalog.
